Most probably few people know this, but the solar New Year around here is nothing more than a commercial date.
Yes, we know, “can’t you have a normal one?” Difficult when normality can’t keep up with what nature demands.
She, the Earth, the Alma Mater indeed, teaches us that life is made of cycles, continuous spirals of sleep and rebirth. So, thinking about it, nothing is more “normal” than considering the days from October 31st to November 10th as the true New Year, in the literal sense.
It is a magical moment, during which our mountains take on gently ghostly shapes, playing hide and seek with colors, tricking our eyes, and preparing to rest. This (absolutely free from sadness or anything macabre) is the reason why we begin by honoring the dead, so they may be benevolent in preserving and protecting us all while Nature is busy sleeping. And it is also for this reason that Capetiempe ends with the Glories (or other kinds of propitiatory fires), so that fire may illuminate the velvety darkness that will be our scenic backdrop in Autumn and Winter.
A cycle ends, therefore, and our Great Mother needs to doze off so she can ensure her vigorous embrace in Spring.
Now, not to be the usual naggers, but which New Year is more practical and sensible — ours or yours?
